How to connect a Float return portal

  • Updated

Connect TRAEDE to Float so that your customers create returns in Float and those returns appear in TRAEDE automatically. Your warehouse receives the return in TRAEDE as usual, and Float then refunds the customer.

Before you start

Check these things first. If any of them are missing, Float returns won't come through correctly.

  • Your webshop order sync is running (for example Shopify or WooCommerce). Float returns are matched to the original order by the customer's email and order number, so the order must already be in TRAEDE.
  • Every product has a unique SKU and EAN. If two products share a SKU or EAN, TRAEDE can't match the returned item.
  • Return reasons (claim causes) are set up, if you want every return to have a reason.
  • If you use Shopify: all Shopify webhooks are installed. See the next section.

Check your Shopify webhooks (Shopify stores only)

Install all 11 Shopify webhooks before you connect Float. Three of them are not installed automatically when you connect a shop, and one of those three, Order created, is required for Float returns to work at all.

  1. In TRAEDE, go to App Store → Shopify.
  2. Find your shop and click its Webhooks count (for example 10 / 11 installed).
  3. In the Webhooks panel, click Install next to every webhook marked Not installed.
  4. Check that the count now shows 11 / 11 installed.
Webhook What it does Needed for Float returns
Order created Imports the original online order into TRAEDE. Float matches every return to this order. Not installed automatically. Required
Return processed When Float confirms a return or exchange in Shopify, TRAEDE updates the order, adds any exchange items, and matches Float's refund to the credit note. Required
Return closed Does the same update as Return processed when a return is closed straight away. It's safe to have both installed. Required
Refund created Creates credit notes from ordinary Shopify refunds, such as POS or manual refunds. Not installed automatically. Required
Order edited Keeps order lines in sync when an order is edited in Shopify. Required
Fulfillment created (POS) Syncs POS and Shopify fulfillments. Not installed automatically. No, but recommended
Placed on hold, Hold released, Cancelled, Moved, Split Keep fulfillment holds and location changes in sync. These five install together. Required

Set up the Float return portal

You set up the portal in three steps: create it in TRAEDE, connect it in Float, then add Float's webhook endpoint in TRAEDE.

1. Create the portal in TRAEDE

  1. From the TRAEDE home screen, go to Settings → Returns → Return portals.
  2. Create a new return portal.
  3. Give the portal a Name.
  4. From the Type dropdown, select Float.
  5. Choose a Return-to inventory location. This is where returned goods are booked back into stock.
  6. Turn on Return reason required if every return must have a claim cause.
  7. Click Save.

When you save, TRAEDE generates a Public ID and a Webhook secret. You can't change either of them afterwards.

Note: When the type is Float, TRAEDE hides the usual portal design options, such as pages, styling and refund methods. Your customers see Float's pages, not a TRAEDE portal.

2. Connect the portal in Float

  1. Copy the Public ID and the Webhook secret from the portal in TRAEDE.
  2. In Float, paste both values into your TRAEDE connection settings.
  3. Copy the webhook endpoint URL that Float gives you, for example an app.floatreturns.com address.

Important: Treat the webhook secret like a password. Paste it only into Float, and don't send it by email or chat.

3. Add the webhook endpoint in TRAEDE

  1. Go back to Settings → Returns → Return portals and open your Float portal.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Paste Float's URL into the Webhook endpoint field.
  4. Click Save.

The connection is now live. TRAEDE uses this endpoint to tell Float when a return has been received.

How a Float return flows

Once the portal is connected, your team handles only one step: receiving the return. Float and TRAEDE take care of the rest.

  1. The customer starts a return in Float by entering their email and order number and choosing the items to return.
  2. Float sends the return to TRAEDE. TRAEDE finds the original webshop order and creates a return (RMA).
  3. Your warehouse receives the return in TRAEDE. Go to Sales returns, open the RMA, and click Receive return. TRAEDE creates the credit note and tells Float the return has arrived.
  4. Float refunds the customer. For Shopify stores, Float makes the refund directly in Shopify. Float then sends the refunded and exchanged amounts back to TRAEDE.
  5. TRAEDE books the credit note automatically when the amounts from Float match.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
Return doesn't appear in TRAEDE The original order isn't in TRAEDE, or the email or order number doesn't match. Check that your webshop order sync is running and that the order exists in TRAEDE. On Shopify, check that the Order created webhook is installed.
Exchange items or Float's refund don't show up in TRAEDE The Return processed or Return closed webhook isn't installed. Open the Shopify Webhooks panel and install both.
Float isn't told when a return is received The webhook endpoint is missing or wrong. Copy the URL from Float again and paste it exactly as given into Webhook endpoint.
A returned item can't be matched Two products share the same SKU or EAN. Make the SKU and EAN unique for each product.
Return is rejected for a missing reason Return reason required is on, but no claim causes are set up. Set up claim causes, or turn off Return reason required.
Item can't be returned The item wasn't on the original order. Float can only return items that were on the original order.
