Changing attribute values on products

  • Updated

You can change an attribute value code for every product at once. Changing a value's name works differently. It is done per variant, so Color "Sand" → "Beige" moves those variants onto a new value called "Beige". This guide uses Color in the examples. The steps are the same for Size.

Which method do I need?

I want to… Use
Change the code (e.g. 20 → 21) for every product at once Method 1
Change the name (e.g. Sand → Beige) on a few products Method 2
Change the name on many products Method 3 (CSV import)

Method 1: Change a code

A code change applies to every product that uses the value, straight away.

  1. Go to Settings → Master data settings → Attributes.
  2. Open the attribute's tab, for example Color or Size.
  3. Select Attributes details & sorting.
  4. Find the value and edit its Code field.
  5. Click Save at the top.

On the same page you can also edit the Description, switch on a custom sort order, and set a Webshop color.

Method 2: Change a name on a few products

  1. Open the product.
  2. Go to the Details tab, then Variants.
  3. Click Quick edit.
  4. Type the new name in the Color (or Size) cell of each variant that should change.
  5. Click Save.

Newer product page: Some brands have a newer product page without a Quick edit button, because the variants are always editable. Edit the cells directly, then click Save now.

The bulk Update data action can't change attribute values. Use Method 3 for many products.

Method 3: Change names in bulk with CSV import

Important: The SKU is how TRAEDE finds the variant to update. If the SKU is missing or doesn't match, the import may create a new variant instead of updating the existing one. Export your products first as a backup.

  1. Prepare a CSV file. Excel files are not supported.
  2. Include a column with the existing SKU of each variant. We also recommend an Item number column, so you can update product-level data in the same file.
  3. Add a column with the new Color (or Size) names.
  4. Go to Products → Import and upload the file.
  5. Map the Color column to Attributes and choose the Color type. To change codes in the same file, also map a column to Attribute codes.
  6. Choose Only update or Update and create.
  7. Run the import.

After a name change: set these up again

The new name is a new value. Settings tied to the old name don't carry over. After Sand → Beige, check:

  • Code: "Beige" has no code until you add one (see Method 1). Until then, the Drops card shows just "Beige".
  • Webshop color: set the colour dot for "Beige".
  • Custom sort order: place "Beige" in the sort order.
  • Translations: add translations for "Beige".
  • Assortment names: update any assortments that use the old name.

What updates automatically

  • Existing orders, invoices and shipments show the new value. Cancelled order lines keep the old value.
  • Once no products use the old value, it disappears from the list in Settings → Attributes.

Limitations

  • Two variants of the same product can't have the same combination of values, for example two "Beige / M". The save will fail.
  • You need permission to edit products. Without it, the Attributes menu item doesn't appear.
