Introduction
This article explains how product tags are synchronized from TRAEDE to Shopify. Many different TRAEDE fields map into Shopify’s tag system, and understanding this flow is important for keeping your Shopify storefront clean, consistent, and automation-friendly.
This guide is useful for users managing product categorization, navigation structures, or theme-driven logic relying on tags.
Shopify’s tag field
In Shopify, products have a Tags field.
This is a generic list where you can add any tag you need for filtering, navigation, apps, or theme logic.
Multiple TRAEDE fields map into Shopify tags
TRADE sends several different product attributes into the same tag field in Shopify.
Examples include:
Collections (explained in another guide)
Top category
Subcategory
TRAEDE’s own tag field
Other classification fields depending on your setup
This means that many different pieces of product data end up in Shopify as tags.
TRAEDE overwrites all existing tags in Shopify
This is critical:
When TRAEDE synchronizes tags, it overwrites all tags already in Shopify.
So if a product has tags you manually added in Shopify, they will be removed the next time TRAEDE synchronizes that product.
Because of this:
You should not manually maintain tags directly in Shopify
You should always maintain tags inside TRAEDE
Recommended workflow for tag management
If you want a product to have a tag such as priority-product, you should:
Add this tag in TRAEDE
Let TRAEDE synchronize it to Shopify
Do not add the tag manually in Shopify, as it will be overwritten.
When to disable tag synchronization
If you plan to manage tags exclusively inside Shopify, you must:
Go to App store → Shopify app settings
Deactivate all tag synchronization options
Only do this if you are sure that all tags should be handled inside Shopify or by another system. This setup is not recommended for most TRAEDE users.
Best practice
TRADE recommends:
Keeping all tag-related fields activated
Managing all tags in TRAEDE
Treating TRAEDE as the single source of truth
This ensures:
Clean, consistent tag structures
Correct filtering and navigation in Shopify
Preventing accidental overwrites of manual Shopify tags
