Introduction
This article explains how to connect TRAEDE’s product locale system to Shopify so that your product names, descriptions, and product types can be synchronized in multiple languages.
Translation setup consists of two parts:
Creating and managing product locales in TRAEDE
Mapping those locales to the correct Shopify stores
This article focuses on how to connect translations to Shopify. For the initial setup of product locales, please refer to the dedicated article on product locale configuration.
Preparing your product locales in TRAEDE
Before connecting translations to Shopify, ensure that your product locales are already created in TRAEDE.
For example, you might have:
Default locale (recommended: English)
Shopify DK
Shopify SE
Shopify EUR, etc.
Your default locale should always be English, unless you have a specific reason not to. All other languages should be set up as additional locales.
(See the separate article on product locale setup for instructions.)
Connecting TRAEDE translations to a Shopify store
To map a Shopify store to the correct language in TRAEDE:
Go to App store → Shopify in TRAEDE.
Locate the Shopify store you want to configure.
Click Edit.
Scroll to the Locale prioritization section.
This section determines:
Which TRAEDE product locale should be used for this Shopify store
Whether TRAEDE should fall back to the default language if translations are missing
Example setup
If you have a Shopify store for European customers and want it to use the B2C Shopify Euro locale:
Select B2C Shopify Euro as the primary locale.
Enable Fallback to default.
Why fallback is important
If fallback is not enabled, a product will not synchronize to Shopify unless every translated field exists in the selected locale.
Example:
If a product is missing its translated product name in the “Euro” locale, TRAEDE will block synchronization entirely.
Fallback ensures that:
Translated values are used when available
Missing translations default to the main language (usually English)
Products always sync successfully
We strongly recommend keeping fallback enabled.
Recommended language structure
We recommend the following approach for most Shopify setups:
Use English as your default locale
Create dedicated locales for each Shopify store (DK, SE, DE, EU, etc.)
Set each locale to fallback to English
This ensures stability and prevents syncing issues when translations are incomplete.
What fields are translatable?
The following product fields can be translated and synchronized to Shopify:
Product name → Shopify “Title”
Product description → Shopify “Description”
Product type (via translated product categories)
These fields will automatically sync in the selected languages whenever product updates are sent to Shopify.
Summary
Product locales must be created in TRAEDE before translations can sync to Shopify.
Each Shopify store can be mapped to a specific locale using Locale prioritization.
Always enable Fallback to default to avoid sync failures.
Product name, description, and product type are fully translatable.
English should be used as your default locale, with additional locales for each market.
