Introduction

This guide explains how to automatically generate EAN numbers for product variants in TRAEDE. EAN numbers function as barcodes and help uniquely identify each product variant. The guide walks you through setting up your GS1 configuration, generating EANs for existing products, and understanding how TRAEDE assigns new numbers.

What is the EAN field?

In TRAEDE, each product variant can have an EAN number (European Article Number) — typically used as the barcode of the product.

• You can manually add EANs via:

  • Quick edit in the variants table

  • Batch import using the product importer

• Or, you can auto generate EANs using your GS1 configuration.

Setting up your GS1 information

To enable auto-generation of EAN numbers, you first need to configure your GS1 settings:

1. Go to Settings

2. Scroll down and click on Miscellaneous
   

3. In the section called EAN generation, fill in the following fields:

• GS1 code: Provided by GS1 (country-specific)

• Manufacturer code: Also provided by GS1 (your company code)

• Next product reference number: The next number in your EAN sequence (similar to invoice number series)

Here, the last digits increase incrementally for each new variant.

Generating EANs for missing variants

Once your GS1 settings are in place:

1. Go to the product page of any product with missing EANs

2. If some variants are missing EANs, a button will appear:
   Generate missing EAN numbers

3. Click the button to open a list of variants without EANs

4. Click Generate to assign EANs to those variants

Optional: Regenerate existing EANs

If you want to regenerate EAN numbers for existing variants:

• Use the checkbox in the yellow box to include already-filled variants

• This will overwrite the current EANs with new ones

What happens when new variants are added?

Whenever you add new variants to a product:

• TRAEDE will automatically ask if you want to generate EANs for the new variants

• You can choose to generate them right away or skip
